Making your own body products at home is not only fun, it’s also a great way to save money.

Take, for example, a sugar scrub. Depending on where you buy it, you could spend anywhere from $10 to $25 – or even more. And when you consider how inexpensive the ingredients for a sugar scrub are – and how easy it is to make yourself –  you’ll never buy this product in the store again!

How to Make Homemade Sugar Scrub

The base of this sugar scrub is one part oil to two parts sugar. Pretty simple, right? Not quite.

I wanted to play around with this formula, using different types of sugars and different types of oils to come up with the perfect sugar scrub. I tried nine different combinations of sugar and oil.

The sugars included turbinado, cane, and white/granulated.

The oils included olive oil, vegetable oil, and coconut oil.

Here are my completely non-scientific findings:

  • Turbinado sugar and olive oil – This made a very coarse scrub that had a distinct olive oil scent.
  • Turbinado sugar and vegetable oil – This made a very coarse scrub that had no noticeable scent.
  • Turbinado sugar and coconut oil – This made a very coarse scrub that had a distinct coconut smell.
  • Cane sugar and olive oil – This made a scrub with a nice consistency. However, it still smelled like olive oil.
  • Cane sugar and vegetable oil – This made a scrub with a nice consistency and no noticeable scent.
  • Cane sugar and coconut oil – This made a scrub with a very nice, creamy consistency. However, the coconut scent was a little too strong for my liking.
  • White sugar and olive oil – The sugar in this scrub was too fine for my liking.
  • White sugar and vegetable oil – Again, the sugar in this scrub was too fine.
  • White sugar and coconut oil – This scrub had a great creamy texture.

The Best Oil And Sugar To Make Sugar Scrub

My favorite sugar/oil combo was cane sugar and vegetable oil. The sugar is just coarse enough to make a scrub with some texture. Plus, using a neutral oil like vegetable oil allows you to add spices, essential oil, or other scented ingredients.

If you want to avoid refined oil, feel free to use virgin coconut oil or something similar.

Pumpkin Spice Sugar Scrub

Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

This pumpkin spice sugar scrub has no actual pumpkin in it. If it did, it would only last a couple of days in the fridge. If you want the added benefit of pumpkin to nourish your skin, mix together equal parts of pumpkin puree and sugar scrub right before using.

Ingredients

  • 2 parts cane sugar
  • 1 part vegetable oil
  • Pumpkin pie spice (or a combination of cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, and cloves)

Instructions

  1. In a mixing bowl, combine sugar, oil, and spice and mix to combine. Place sugar scrub in a sealed jar until ready to use.
  2. Please note: For the container of scrub you see in the photo above, I used 2/3 cup cane sugar, 1/3 cup vegetable oil, and one heaping teaspoon of pumpkin pie spice).
