Copycat LUSH lip scrub recipe, from Cheap Recipe Blog

Over the past few months, I’ve become really interested obsessed with making my own beauty and body products at home.

There’s so many reasons to get on the DIY beauty product bandwagon.

Besides being fun, making your own products at home allows you to better control what goes in and on your body. That means fewer chemicals, additives, and preservatives – and more of what is good for your body.

So far I’ve made homemade body scrub, homemade body butter, homemade lip balm, and now this – homemade lip scrub – inspired by one of my favorite cosmetics stores: LUSH.

One of my favorite products from LUSH is their Popcorn Lip Scrub. It’s an exfoliating lip scrub that tastes just like kettle corn. It makes your lips soft in the most delicious way. Upon reading the list of ingredients, I decided to try making my own copycat lip scrub at home. I ended up with a scrub that was very similar to the LUSH product.

The Cost

Another benefit of making your own beauty products at home is saving money. Case in point, this lip scrub. Here’s what I paid:

  • Jojoba oil (A two-ounce bottle cost $5.99 at Whole Foods for $5.99. I used one tablespoon) = $1.49
  • Coconut oil (one tablespoon) = $.19
  • Other ingredients (sugar, cornmeal, and salt) = $.15

Total cost for three small containers of homemade lip scrub = $1.83 (or 61 cents for one)

One small container of LUSH Popcorn Lip Scrub is $9.99. The homemade version wins by a landslide for cost savings!

Now That Your Lips Are Soft…

This lip scrub will make your lips soft and kissable. The next step? Color! You absolutely must follow your lip routine with this homemade tinted lip balm:

DIY Lip Scrub

Yield: 3 small containers
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

Did I mention this formula is super adaptable? If you don't have turbinado sugar, try using regular granulated sugar or Sugar In The Raw that has been finely blended. If you can't find jojoba oil, you could probably substitute olive oil and end up with similar results. For the most basic of basic lip scrubs, simply mix one part sugar with one part olive oil. No matter what, you'll end up with soft lips - I promise!

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons turbinado sugar, blended until fine
  • 1 tablespoon cornmeal
  • Pinch of fine grain sea salt
  • 1 tablespoon jojoba oil
  • 1 tablespoon coconut oil

Instructions

  1. Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix together until smooth.
  2. Store lip scrub in tightly sealed individual containers. I like to clean and reuse small sample-sized containers once they are empty. This lip scrub will keep for up to a month refrigerated.
