Retro Recipes: No-bake chocolate oatsies

Do you ever think about the foods you ate when you were a child?

The foods you ate then are probably a lot different than the foods you eat now. Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Certain dishes fall out of fashion – just like clothes, music, movies, slang, etc.

But that’s no reason not to take a look back and appreciate what used to be.

Which is exactly what I am going to be doing with my new blog series:

Retro Recipes

In the next few weeks, I am going to be cooking up some old-school retro recipes, including:

  • Foods I ate as a kid
  • Forgotten recipes that were big in the 70s and 80s
  • Other old-school recipes as suggested by readers

I am super excited about this series, and I hope you’ll follow along.

It’s going to be radical.

How to make no-bake chocolate oatsies

First Up: Chocolate Oatsies

I come from a family of sweet tooths.

When I was young, my older brothers would make these chocolate cookies all the time. This was one of the only food items they would make – other than pizza rolls and frozen pizzas.

This is a testament to how easy this recipe is. If my then-adolescent brothers could make these cookies (in a matter of minutes) – then truly anyone can make them!

About The Recipe

A lot of retro recipes get a bad rap for being bland, boring or just not that good.

But these chocolate oatsies are none of the above.

I loved them when I was a child – and I am happy to report that I love them just as much as an adult. They’re good because:

  • They’re not overly sweet. I changed one thing about the original recipe, and that was to reduce the amount of sugar from 2 cups to 1 cup. These are plenty sweet – and 2 cups of sugar is excessive and unnecessary.
  • They’re chewy in a great way. There’s something about the texture of these cookies that I love. They’re chewy and moist. Use old-fashioned oats for the best results.
  • They’re quick and easy to make. These treats take less than 10 minutes to make, start to finish.

These cookies are also gluten-free. But I’m quite sure that’s an accident and wasn’t the original intent of the recipe. Gluten free wasn’t really a thing in the 80s!

No-Bake Chocolate Oatsies

Yield: 12 cookies
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Cook Time: 1 minute
Additional Time: 20 minutes

You can use either old-fashioned oats or quick oats for this recipe. I prefer old fashioned because the end result is a chewier cookie.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 tablespoons cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup whole milk or half and half
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

  1. Place sugar, cocoa, butter, and milk in a medium saucepan. Turn on heat to medium-high and stir until mixtures comes to a boil. Boil for one minute, stirring constantly. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla.
  2. Add oats to liquid mixture. Stir to combine.
  3. Place one heaping tablespoon of the mixture on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Repeat until done. Place in the fridge to cool completely.
