Several years ago, I spent 6 months in Santiago, Chile. My goal was to study Spanish, travel, and immerse myself in Chilean culture. Needless to say, I had the best time sampling the many different dishes of Chile, including pastel de choclo, cazuela, lots and lots of seafood and fresh vegetables, spicy green condiment pebre – and the completos.
Chile has its own version of a hot dog – el completo (the “complete” or “total”) – and it’s delicious.
Why is it called a completo? My guess is that it’s complete (a.k.a fully loaded) with a lot of delicious hot dog toppings.
What Is On A Chilean Completo?
A Chilean completo is a fully loaded hot dog. The typical toppings include:
- Avocado
- Chopped tomatoes
- Mayonnaise
It’s also traditional to eat a completo with the addition of sauerkraut and chopped onion.
Chileans sometimes refer to the completo as the completo Italiano, aptly named because of the presence of the colors of the Italian flag: Red (chopped tomato), green (mashed avocado), and white (mayonnaise).
There are many variations on the completo. The Chilean completo recipe, below, incorporates the traditional toppings listed above.
When it comes to budget-friendly foods, hot dogs are a great option. While most people don’t want to make a habit of eating hot dogs for a meal, every once in awhile they’re fun to eat – especially during grilling season.

How weird. My dinner last night was a fully loaded hot dog just not with your topping except onions. Might try the avocado and mayo. Said to my son one night I hungry for hot dogs and his reply – I’ve never said that in my life. He’s 50. I guess one too many when he was growing up.
Fabulous recipe. Absolutely my favorite hot dog recipe of all time. Thank you for the recipe.
