Some Thanksgiving leftover recipes taste nothing like the original dish (hello turkey & cranberry salsa nachos). Some are basically a recreation of the original meal in a new vessel (like these Thanksgiving leftover burritos).

This recipe is quite similar to the original Thanksgiving meal – with a few deviations:

  • The ingredients are layered in a casserole dish
  • Cream cheese is added, adding a creamy element to the dish
  • A drizzle of sweet-tangy dressing (like Dorothy Lynch, French or Western) is added

The end result? A super delicious hotdish that was devoured at a recent potluck I attended. You really can’t go wrong when combining the familiar, holiday flavors of a turkey dinner.

Customizing This Recipe

Because you’re literally just layering ingredients on top of each other – this recipe can be customized to use up what leftovers you have:

  • Stuffing
  • Turkey
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Vegetables: Green beans, Brussels sprouts, asparagus – or even green bean casserole
  • Squash: Roasted squash is ideal for this recipe – but I would avoid super sweet mashed squash in this hotdish
  • Cranberries: Don’t go overboard, but a few bites of cranberry would go nice with these flavors.
  • Toppings: Shredded cheddar cheese, French fried onions, buttered Corn Flakes or another crunchy hotdish topping

Don’t Skip This Essential Step: Rehydrating The Stuffing

Reheated stuffing can be quite dry. Baking it again can cause it to become even more dry.

And no one wants a dry hotdish.

The fix? Adding more water or chicken broth to the leftover stuffing. Simply mix in 1/2 cup to 1 cup of water or chicken broth (depending on how salty your stuffing is) to moisten the stuffing.

Thanksgiving Leftover Hotdish

Yield: 6 servings
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 45 minutes
Total Time: 55 minutes

This recipe will serve 6, but different amounts of leftovers can be used to make a bigger or smaller hotdish. You're basically layering ingredients, so feel free to use however much you want to feed your family.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups leftover stuffing
  • 1/2 to 1 cup water (or chicken broth)
  • 2 cups leftover turkey, chopped
  • 4 ounces cream cheese
  • 1/2 cup Dorothy Lynch dressing and condiment
  • 1 cup leftover Brussels sprouts (or green beans), chopped
  • 1 cup leftover roasted squash
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375F. Rehydrate stuffing with 1/2 to 1 cup of water, depending on how dry it is. This can be done with water or chicken broth. Consider how salty and how dry the stuffing is and use water or chicken broth to moisten it.
  2. In a casserole dish sprayed with nonstick cooking spray, layer stuffing, chopped turkey, dollops of cream cheese, Dorothy Lynch dressing, Brussels sprouts, squash, and cheese.
  3. Bake, uncovered for 40 to 45 minutes, until hotdish is warmed through and cheese is melted.
