Taste Testing ALDI Products
I love ALDI. It’s one of my favorite places to get cheap groceries, which helps me save a lot of money on food.
Usually, I buy the same food items there – olive oil, nuts, carbonated water, crackers, and cheese.
But lately, I’ve been trying new food items – mostly frozen specialty foods and ready-to-go items from their refrigerated section.
Take a look at some of the food items I’ve recently tried from ALDI:
Smoked Salmon Poke Bowl
- Rating: A-
I was a little hesitant to try this, since I’m always a little leery to try raw fish that isn’t fresh or is purchased from a grocery store. But the poke bowl from ALDI contains smoked salmon, which is usually a safe bet. And I actually loved it! There was a good amount of fish, and the sauce was delicious. The perfect amount for a meal.
The only reason I wouldn’t give this a solid A is because the bulk of the bowl is rice and fish. I like poke bowls that are full of fresh veggies and various add-ins. This bowl serves as a great base, but a lot of my poke-bowl favorites are missing (avocado, kimchi, carrots, etc.) These additional items can be added to the bowl, but this will also add to the cost of your meal.
Make your own ALDI copycat poke bowls at home.
Frozen Sushi
- Rating: B+
Frozen sushi would typically give me pause, but this isn’t bad. In fact, I think this is a step up from Trader Joe’s refrigerated sushi.
I heated it up in the microwave for about 90 seconds total, per package directions, and the end result was a totally passable fully-cooked sushi experience. I served it with a side of spicy mayonnaise.
Vegetable Potstickers With Dipping Sauce
- Rating: B
These vegetable potstickers from ALDI were decent. There was nothing particularly good or bad about them.
Salt And Pepper Calamari
- Rating: B:
First, I totally overbaked this calmari, as you can see from the photo. But it was still pretty good! Similar to calamari I’ve ordered at restaurants.
The serving size (pictured) wasn’t all that big, and the sweet chili dipping sauce was a little gummy.
But still a good bet if you’re craving calamari.
Wild Caught Shrimp Taco Mix
- Rating: C
Meh. I gave this wild shrimp taco mix from ALDI a try, but wasn’t impressed. The portion size was pretty small – definitely not enough to feed a family.
If I wanted to make shrimp tacos with veggies and black beans, I would just purchase these items individually.
