DIY Coffee Spices
The perfect gift for the coffee lover on your list: DIY spices for coffee blend that can be sprinkled on top of a hot cup of coffee, latte or cappuccino.
Are you looking for affordable ways to upgrade your morning coffee?
Many coffee shops have containers of cinnamon, nutmeg, cocoa, and other spices that customers can sprinkle on top of their lattes.
Even Starbucks used to have a “sprinkle station” stocked with cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla, and chocolate powder. But they quietly discontinued their spice bar last year. (Yes, we noticed.)
Spices add a bit of extra flavor and zhuzh to a cup of coffee, especially coffee drinks with foam on top.
And it’s an equally delicious idea, whether you’re at a coffee shop or at home.
Why not create a custom coffee sprinkle spice blend as a gift for the coffee lover on your list?
It’s a simple and affordable way to upgrade coffee. And there are many different flavor combinations to try.
This can be used to top a foamy coffee drink (like a latte, cappuccino or mocha), brewed coffee, Norwegian egg coffee, coffee alternatives, hot chocolate, and even tea and chai tea lattes.

Customize Your Spice Blend
While you can certainly sprinkle straight cinnamon or nutmeg on top of your coffee, customizing a spice blend is more flavorful – and more fun. Here are some combinations to try:
- The basic: 4 parts cinnamon to 1 part nutmeg.
- Chocolate: A mix of cocoa powder and cinnamon.
- Mexican hot chocolate: A mix of cocoa powder, cinnamon, and cayenne pepper (just a pinch!)
- Nordic: A mix of cinnamon, nutmeg, and cardamom.
Give A Coffee-Themed Gift
The ultimate, budget-friendly gift for a coffee lover? Choose 2 or 3 from this list:
- A package of coffee beans or ground coffee
- A selection of tea
- A cozy mug
- A travel coffee mug
- Homemade coffee syrups
- Homemade coffee creamer
- Chai tea concentrate
- This spice blend
Another Way To Use Coffee Spices
In addition to sprinkling this on top of your coffee, you can also use it during coffee brewing process.
Simply mix a small amount of the spice blend in with your coffee grounds. When the coffee is brewed, it is infused with the spices.
Start with 1/4 teaspoon of the spice blend – more if you’re brewing a large amount of coffee.
Nordic Spice Blend
Feel free to adjust up or down, to make a larger or smaller amount of the spice blend.
Ingredients
- 5 teaspoons ground cinnamon
- 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cardamom
Instructions
- Mix all spices together. Place in a recycled spice jar or salt/pepper shaker.
- Sprinkle hot coffee, a latte, cappuccino or your favorite coffee beverage with spice blend.
I know exactly who I’m gifting this to! (In addition to making my own container 😉) And how genius to reuse empty spice bottles! 👍🏼👍🏼 Thanks Haley!!
Where are the recipes for the other ones listed? Such as the Mexican Hot Chocolate sprinkle? Or the Chocolate Sprinkle both listed above as other alternatives for coffee sprinkles. I can’t find these recipes in your site.
Thanks!
Hi Vickie! These recipes are not on my site yet. For the hot chocolate coffee blend, I would do 3 parts cocoa to 1 part cinnamon (so for example 3 tbsp cocoa + 1 tbsp cinnamon). For the Mexican chocolate sprinkle, I would do the same ratio plus just a pinch of cayenne pepper. Hope this helps!
Love your site to aid in bringing delicious healthy beverages home. Do you have a turmeric blend, like a golden milk mix that could be used in different beverages?
Look forward to watching your site grow.
Thanks, Deb! I do not have a golden milk mix recipe yet – but that’s a great idea! I’ll keep it in mind.
