Extra Buttery Chex Mix
What’s better than regular homemade Chex Mix? Extra buttery Chex Mix, of course! This recipe ensures that every bite is extremely buttery and full of flavor.
There’s one food that I simply cannot. Stop. Eating.
And it’s Chex Mix.
I don’t make it very often because when I do, I eat way too much.
Around the holidays, however, I make an exception. But I don’t make the traditional classic Chex Mix recipe.
Instead, I make an insanely buttery version of the classic snack mix.
Instead of using a Chex Mix seasoning packet, I make a homemade sauce made with extra butter and a variety of seasonings.
If you like your Chex Mix buttery and full of flavor – you’re in the right place.
How To Make The Best Chex Mix Of Your Life
The ingredient list to make this Chex Mix is pretty basic – but don’t be fooled. This will be the most flavorful, indulgent Chex Mix you’ll ever eat!
- Chex cereal: What types of Chex to use? I used 2 cups of Corn Chex, 2 cups of Rice Chex, and 1 cup of Wheat Chex. I like to use Corn and Rice Chex in higher amounts than Wheat Chex. Another option is to use Crispix Cereal which is both corn and rice based.
- Note: If you want to make gluten-free Chex Mix, use Corn and Rice Chex and skip the Wheat Chex.
- Butter: To make extra buttery Chex Mix you’ll need 2 sticks + 2 tablespoons of butter. Yes, it’s a lot but it’s 100% worth it if you want to make the perfect party snack.
- Worcestershire sauce: This is the quintessential Chex Mix seasoning agent. Worcestershire sauce adds flavor and umami – and we’re adding a good amount of it to make a good bold Chex Mix recipe. Look for Lea & Perrins Worcestershire Sauce.
- Seasoned salt: Seasoned salt is salt with extra spices and herbs added. Use this instead of regular salt in Chex Mix. Make your own seasoned salt.
- Garlic powder: This Chex Mix is extra buttery and extra garlicky! A generous amount of garlic powder (not garlic salt!) is added to the buttery mixture.
- Onion powder: For best results, add onion powder in addition to garlic powder for even more flavor.
- Hot sauce (optional): I love adding hot sauce to the seasoned butter for more flavor and a hint of spice. If you’re not keen on spicy food, simply leave it out!
- Extra ingredients: For this recipe, I used 2 cups of Bugles, 1/2 cup of peanuts, and 1/2 cup Corn Nuts as extra ingredients. Feel free to choose your extras from the list, below.
To make the buttery mixture, melt butter in a sauce pan over low heat. Add Worcestershire sauce, spices, and hot sauce, if using.
Place all dry ingredients on a large baking sheet (you may need to use 2 depending on the size of your pan). Pour on the butter mixture and toss with the dry ingredients. Alternative, you can also place the dry ingredients in a large bowl and toss with the butter mixture.
The party mix is baked low and slow to ensure each piece of cereal is permeated with the buttery sauce – and to avoid browning or burning.
Extra Ingredients To Add To Chex Mix
There are so many delicious ingredients that taste great in Chex Mix, aside from the actual Chex cereal.
To ensure that your Chex Mix turns out extra buttery, follow the recipe below and keep the dry ingredient to butter mixture ratio the same. Keeping that in mind, here are some delicious dry ingredients to add to your recipe:
- Bugles (original flavor)
- Corn Nuts
- Cheez-Its (or other cheese crackers)
- Sesame sticks
- Garlic rye chips
- Bagel chips
- Pretzel sticks
- Nuts (peanuts, pecans, walnuts, pistachios, etc.)
Is this the best Chex Mix recipe ever? I think it is. Just think about it: When you’re eating the homemade version of original Chex party mix, you’re probably reaching for the pieces that are more flavorful and more buttery than the rest.
With this simple recipe, you’re making more of the buttery seasoning, tossing it with the cereal mixture so each piece is coated and flavored.
Once the extra buttery Chex Mix is room temperature, store in an airtight container for several weeks. (Side note: It won’t last that long!)
Why use one stick of butter when you can use 2 sticks + 2 tablespoons of butter?!
This recipe is great for game day, Super Bowl parties, holiday parties, movie nights or even as a food gift.
