The recipe, below, is adaptable, depending on how much ham you have.

I recommend starting out with 2 tablespoons of mayonnaise per 1 cup of ground ham. But you can certainly add more if you prefer a creamier ham salad.

What You’ll Need To Make The Best Ham Salad

The ingredient list for this leftover ham salad spread is short (only 4 ingredients!), simple, and affordable. You’ll need:

  • Leftover ham: This recipe is ideal for using up leftover Easter ham or Sunday ham. If you don’t have actual leftover ham, feel free to use ham steak: An affordable piece of sliced ham that’s ready to eat. This is a good option if you want to enjoy ham salad – but don’t have a whole ham roast at your disposal.
  • Mayonnaise: Regular mayonnaise is preferred, but you can also substitute salad dressing (Miracle Whip).
  • Sweet relish: It doesn’t take much to make homemade ham salad taste amazing. Instead of adding salt and other salty seasonings, we are flavoring this ham salad with sweet ingredients, including sweet pickle relish.
  • Sugar: I’m from the camp that believes adding a pinch of sugar adds great flavor to so many savory recipes. A pinch of sugar in this recipe balances out the saltiness of the ham.

And that’s it. No salt needed. Add pepper if you’d like. Scroll down for detailed recipe.

How To Grind Ham

There are a few options for grinding your leftover ham:

  • An old-fashioned meat grinder
  • A meat grinder attachment on a countertop mixer
  • A food processor with grater attachment
  • A knife + cutting board to finely chop the ham (this might take awhile!)

The ground ham should be soft and finely ground, like shown in this photo:
