Indian spiced bar mix recipe, from Cheap Recipe Blog

As much social and cultural pressure as there is to love craft beer, I just can’t get into it. I’ve never been a beer drinker and probably never will.

When it came time to style this photo, it only made sense to photograph it with beer in the background. I bought the cheapest beer I could find: two one-dollar bottles from Trader Joe’s.

Once I was done taking the photos, I dumped the beer down the drain. My bf panicked when he heard this: “Wait – you dumped it out? You could have waited until I was around… I mean, you just threw beer away?”

He didn’t know that I photographed this at 8:00 a.m. And that the beer was warm. I don’t like to throw food or drink away, but, well… I just had to in this case.

While I don’t love beer, I do love me some bar mix.

You know, the little cups of complimentary snack mix that some bars give out to patrons? When I spotted sesame sticks at the grocery store, I was reminded of this addicting little nosh, and decided to make my own version at home.

A simple bar mix recipe made fancy with Indian spices. @cheaprecipeblog

This Snack Mix Is Ready To Party

The next time you throw a party where drinks are served, make a batch of this bar mix. Your guests will love it.

While sesame sticks and nuts are great on their own, the Indian spices really make this mix stand out. Someone with more knowledge of pairing beer and food could easily tell you what kind of beer to serve with this mix. If you have any ideas, please share it below!

As for cost, two cups of this bar mix cost about $2.00 to make. I purchased sesame sticks and peanuts at Trader Joe’s. The bulk food section of your grocery store may have both of these items.

All in all, this is an inexpensive snack mix recipe that takes just a few minutes to whip up. I hope you enjoy it!

If you're not keen on Indian spices, you could certainly substitute another spice mix. Try cajun or southwest, or make your own. A spicy version comes to mind, with a hefty spoonful of cayenne pepper mixed in.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sesame sticks
  • 1/2 cup mixed nuts (I used peanuts and almonds)
  • 3 tablespoons butter, melted
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons garam masala (or other Indian spice mix)
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 250F. Place sesame sticks and nuts on a small baking sheet. Combine melted butter and spices. Pour over sesame sticks and nuts; stir to evenly coat.
  2. Bake for 15 minutes, stirring once, until lightly toasted. Allow to cool before serving.
